Programmes are sent out the week before the session and sessions which attract less than 6 governors will be cancelled. ALL of our governor training courses are held at Causton Street (map).

December 2009

Wed 2 Dec 10am - 12noon How to prepare for and what to expect from a Section 48 Inspection ~ for Governors and Heads. A look at what to expect in terms of Christian distinctiveness of the school, Collective worship, RE and leadership and management.

SPRING TERM ~ 2010:

January 2010

Weds 20 Jan 10am - 12noon New(ish) Governors.  This session will enable those who have recently been appointed to understand the role of governing bodies in the education system, what is expected of them and how they can carry out their responsibilities effectively

Thurs 28th Jan 1.30pm - 4pm The New OFSTED Framework ~ for Governors. An overview of the structure of the new Inspection framework which comes into effect from 1st September 2009 and a detailed look at areas specific to the governing body.

February 2010

Mon 1st Feb 2pm - 4pm How Building Projects are funded.  A journey of discovery through the sea of the various sources of funding available for building projects at VA schools, including the arrangements for devolved formula capital (DFC). This session is aimed at those that are involved in decision making / finances regarding building matters.

March 2010

Mon 1st March 10am - 12noon Primary Curriculum. The government is proposing some important changes to the primary curriculum and, in January 2008, commissioned Sir Jim Rose to lead an independent review.
As governors you are responsible for ensuring a broad and balanced curriculum as well as monitoring the quality of curricular provision. As such you should be aware of the Rose Review and the consequent proposals being put forward by the DCSF for implementation in all primary schools. The session aims to inform you of the contents of the Rose Review, explore the detail of the proposals and ensure you are well prepared for the changes that lie ahead.

Weds 10th March 9.30am - 4.30pm Safer Recruitment ~ for all governors.  A valuable course for those on interview panels or who are new to their role. It is a legal requirement that at least one member of an interviewing panel has undertaken this training.

Thurs 18th March 10am - 12noon Making the Most of Governor Visits to Schools.  It is accepted good practice for governors to visit their schools on a regular basis.  In order to ensure that these visits are as informative and useful as possible, it is important that governing bodies have a clear understanding of their purpose and an agreed working relationship with the school.
This session will explore the do’s and don’ts of governor visits to schools, as well as share good practice and examine further the protocol underwriting effective visits.

SUMMER TERM ~ 2010:

The following dates/times are for courses that will be held and some of the content is still to be confirmed.

 

April 2010

Weds 28 April 2pm - 4pm The Role of the Governing Body and the new Section 5 Ofsted Framework. This session will look at the governors roles, what is expected of them and how they can carry out their responsibilities effectively. It will also give governors an understanding of the governor grading system in the new framework and what inspectors will be looking for, as well as, how governors hold the school to account.

May 2010

Thurs 13 May 10am - 12noon

Mon 24 May 2pm - 4pm Exclusions.  This session will look at the role of the governing body in exclusions.

June 2010

Mon 14 June 2pm - 4pm

July 2010

Thurs 1 July 10am - 12noon New Admission Arrangement.  From September 2010 Local Authorities have to co-ordinate in year/casual admissions as well as starting school and secondary transfer. Governing bodies should have consulted on the new scheme earlier in the year.
This session will look at the changes at school level that will have to be made, and answer any questions governors may have on the new regime.
